Western lowland gorilla baby born at Bioparc Fuengirola
Bioparc Fuengirola has announced the birth of a western lowland gorilla baby during public visiting hours. Those in the area were able to witness live the mother's first care for the newborn.
This birth is especially important because the western lowland gorilla is listed as a critically endangered species. Zoos that participate in coordinated breeding programs provide a key genetic reserve for the future of the species.
According to the Bioparc team, both mother and baby are in good condition. The images show how the gorilla holds the baby against her chest, cleans it gently and never loses sight of it for a second, typical behaviors of an experienced female.
These types of births also have great educational value. For many people it is the first time they see a gorilla so closely and understand that, behind each number on a list of threatened species, there are individuals with family bonds, emotions and complex behaviors.
Bioparcs and other similar centers insist that their goal is not only to exhibit animals, but also to support conservation projects in natural habitat and raise public awareness about the causes that endanger great apes like gorillas: loss of jungle, hunting and illegal trade.
