Aragón joins the reintroduction of the Iberian lynx in the Huerva river basin
Aragón has announced that it will join the Iberian lynx reintroduction program with the release of eight specimens in the Huerva river basin. This is a key step to extend the presence of the species towards the Ebro Valley and the northeastern peninsula.
The selected area combines Mediterranean scrub, forests and agricultural mosaics, with good availability of rabbit, the main prey of the Iberian lynx. In addition, much of the area is already part of the Natura Network, which facilitates habitat management and compatibility with traditional activities.
The project includes agreements with municipalities, landowners and associations in the area, as well as intensive monitoring of reintroduced animals. The lynxes will carry GPS collars to study their movements and detect possible conflicts or threats.
For the territory, the presence of the lynx can become a differentiating element, linked to nature tourism, environmental education and landscape enhancement. At the same time, the message is reinforced that coexistence between extensive livestock farming, hunting and large predators is possible if well planned.
The recovery of the Iberian lynx is one of the most striking success stories of conservation in Europe, and the incorporation of new areas such as the Huerva basin is fundamental to guarantee its long-term future.
